The quadrupole mass spectrometers (QMS) are well known and used in many fields of the world. The most of these instruments are used for GC/MS, which are simple and easy for operation by full-computerization. I feel that the most of QMS user does not know how to separate ions with different mass to charge ratio (m/z) by QMS. The mechanism of ion separation on QMS was not understood easier than that of magnetic sector mass spectrometer. I explain the basis of quadrupole mass spectrometer in this commentary.

Key words: Quadrupole mass spectrometer, Ion selection by quadrupole mass filter, Oscillation stability of quadrupole mass filter, Collision-induced dissociation, Quadrupole mass filter as collision cell
