A narrow charge state distribution is observed for Zn7-metallothionein ionized by electrospray and nanospray ionization in solutions that conserve its native structure. Based on the structure determined by X-ray crystallography, average intercharge distances are calculated, which are consistent with earlier models for geometric distribution and with direct measurements of intercharge distances on a polypeptide.
